Applied Technology Associates (ATA) is seeking a Robotics Software Engineer in support to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. ATA is supporting AFRL in a variety of areas related to the design and flight of space vehicles. One of those areas is in the application and implementation of robotic assembly and integration of spacecraft while on-orbit. ATA is looking for qualified candidates who are interested in working within a small, agile, innovative team supporting Air Force projects and who share a strong desire to create a work environment that is highly collaborative, rewarding, and fun. The successful candidate will serve as an engineer within AFRL/ATA’s guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) team and contribute to a collection of projects to help with the development of methods and algorithms for orbiting robotic assembly of spacecraft and their implementation. Current projects include support to two different laboratories for the purposes of raising the technology readiness levels (TRLs) of GNC algorithms and software. The projects focus on the use of ground-based robots and robotic arms while simulating the orbital dynamics they would encounter. Assembly methods, control algorithm, and computer vision algorithm development are some of the tasks. The laboratories emulate many aspects of spacecraft flight providing real-time testbeds and verification and validation platforms for GNC and related algorithms and software. We work in a heavily MATLAB-based environment, using MATLAB for modelling, simulation, testing, data analysis, and algorithm development but position is heavily focused on software development, integration, and testing using C++ in the Robot Operating System (ROS). Simulation support inside ROS is also needed.

Essential Functions: 

  • - Develop and apply methods and algorithms for spacecraft assembly

  • - Develop and apply algorithms for space-based robotic movement and grasping

  • - Develop simulations for verification and validation of algorithms

  • - Develop simulations for testing and benchmarking algorithms and implementations

  • - Establish and apply algorithm performance metrics

  • - Represent ATA well with our customers

  • - Perform all other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience: 

  • - Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited program

  • - U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

  • - Experience programming in C++

  • - Experience in software integration and testing

  • - Experience in robotics

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • - Ph.D. in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited program

  • - Active security clearance

  • - Experience using and developing in the Robot Operating System (ROS)

  • - Background in spacecraft dynamics and/or guidance, navigation, and control

  • - Experience with revision control systems such as Git

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: 

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.
